If Hazelnut is the confident explorer of our family, then Caramel is the gentle soul who quietly watches the world before stepping into it.
She has never been the loudest.
Never the first to rush toward something new.
Instead, she prefers to observe.
To understand.
To make sure everything feels safe before taking her first step.
When we first met Caramel, we simply thought she was a shy little puppy.
Years later, we realized she was teaching us something much deeper.
Love Found Us Twice
We originally drove from Jakarta to Bandung for one reason.
To meet Hazelnut.
He was the only puppy left from the litter we had been asking about, and we wanted to see if there was a connection before making such an important decision.
When we arrived, however, the breeder gently placed two little Corgis in front of us.
One was Hazelnut.
The other was a tiny sable girl who would later become Caramel.
Although they came from different parents, they had grown up together in the same kennel since they were very young.
Watching them play side by side, we couldn’t imagine separating them.
We came to Bandung expecting to bring home one puppy.
Instead, we came home with two.
Looking back, it was one of the best decisions we’ve ever made.
The Puppy We Worried About
Our journey back to Jakarta lasted almost six hours because of heavy traffic.
For two tiny puppies, it was their very first long car ride.
During the trip, Caramel became unusually quiet.
She wasn’t interested in playing.
She barely moved.
As first-time pawrents, we couldn’t stop worrying.
We thought she would be the one who became sick after arriving home.
But life had a different plan.
While we spent the journey worrying about Caramel, she settled into her new home surprisingly well.
Hazelnut, on the other hand, became seriously ill the very next day.
It was our first lesson that puppies don’t always react the way we expect.
Sometimes, the one who worries us the most turns out to be the strongest.
A Gentle Soul
As Caramel grew older, her personality became clearer.
She has always been careful with new experiences.
Crowded places aren’t really her favorite.
She prefers quiet cafés, peaceful parks, and familiar faces.
Whenever we visit somewhere new, Caramel likes to observe first.
She watches.
She listens.
She takes her time.
Only after she feels safe does her playful side begin to appear.
Some people might mistake that for fear.
We see it differently.
We think she’s simply thoughtful.
The Day Everything Changed
One day, life surprised us again.
A female Samoyed suddenly needed a new home after being abandoned by her previous owner.
Without planning it, we decided to help and welcomed her into our family.
Hazelnut immediately loved having a new friend.
The two of them played together almost from the beginning.
At first, everything seemed perfectly normal.
Until Caramel changed.
Almost overnight, she stopped eating.
She began vomiting.
She became weak and unusually quiet.
For nearly two weeks, we visited the veterinarian again and again, hoping each treatment would help.
But nothing seemed to change.
Every day we asked ourselves the same question.
“What are we missing?”
One Difficult Goodbye
Eventually, we found ourselves facing a heartbreaking decision.
Although we had already grown attached to the Samoyed, Caramel’s health had become our biggest priority.
With heavy hearts, we found another loving family who was ready to adopt her.
It wasn’t easy.
But we believed it was the right thing to do.
Then something happened that we still remember to this day.
Within just two days after the Samoyed had left, Caramel slowly began to recover.
She started eating again.
Her energy returned.
Her bright little eyes came back.
We can never say for certain what caused it.
Perhaps it was simply a coincidence.
Perhaps there were other reasons we never fully understood.
Or perhaps…
Caramel simply wasn’t ready to share the family she loved so dearly.
Whatever the reason, that experience taught us something we have never forgotten.
Dogs can be far more emotionally sensitive than we sometimes realize.
What Caramel Taught Us
Living with Caramel has changed the way we understand love.
She taught us that love doesn’t always arrive with excitement.
Sometimes it arrives quietly.
Sometimes it patiently waits.
Sometimes it simply wants to know that home is still home.
Caramel has never needed to be the center of attention.
She doesn’t ask for much.
She simply wants to be close to the people she loves.
And somehow…
That’s more than enough.
Today
Today, Caramel is still the same gentle little girl who came home with us from Bandung.
She still prefers peaceful places over busy crowds.
She still takes her time before trusting new people.
And she still gets excited whenever it’s time for another road trip.
Some dogs fill a room with energy.
Caramel fills it with comfort.
Looking back, we thought we were bringing home a puppy.
What we really brought home was one of the gentlest hearts we’ve ever known.
